Participant Feedback

From those who have been through the programmes

Rohani Md. Noor

Melaka, 54 years old

I came in not knowing how to read my loan statements properly. By the end of the three weeks, I had mapped out all four of our household debts and could explain to my husband exactly what the total interest charges were. That clarity alone was worth the course fee.

The phone consultation with the counsellor was what I was most hesitant about β€” I had not spoken to anyone about our financial situation before. The counsellor was very measured and did not push any particular solution. She explained what AKPK could and could not offer, and left the decisions with me. I found that respectful.

I had tried reading about AKPK online but the information was confusing and contradictory. The workshop explained it clearly β€” what the programme involves, how it affects your credit record, and what happens after you complete it. The facilitator was patient with questions and did not make me feel embarrassed for not knowing.

We completed the Recovery Programme as a household β€” my wife and I attended sessions separately where needed. The counsellor we were assigned made very clear what information was shared with the group and what was not. We came away with a written plan that we are still following six months later. It is working.

I had some hesitation because I thought the material would be too basic. It was not. The hire purchase module in particular covered things I genuinely did not know β€” specifically around how early settlement figures are calculated under Malaysian rules. That was directly useful to a decision I was facing.

The printed binder from the Recovery Programme is something I refer to regularly. It has all our household figures, the repayment order we agreed with the counsellor, and the six-week review notes. Having everything in one physical document β€” not scattered across emails or apps β€” made it easier to stay on track.

Case Studies

Three participant journeys, in more detail

The following accounts have been prepared with participant permission. Names have been anonymised at their request.

Case Study β€” Understanding Household Debt

The Challenge

A retired teacher in her mid-fifties with three credit card accounts and a personal loan. She had been making minimum payments for several years without a clear view of her total interest burden or how long it would take to clear the balances at the current rate.

The Programme

She completed the three-week Understanding Household Debt course. By the end of Week 2, she had a complete debt map for the first time. The counsellor consultation in Week 3 confirmed that she did not need AKPK's Debt Management Programme β€” she had more options than she had assumed.

The Outcome

Within two months of completing the course, she had closed one credit card and redirected the minimum payment to the account with the highest interest rate. She described the process as "finally knowing what I was actually dealing with." Timeline to full clearance was revised from uncertain to approximately four years.

Case Study β€” Practical Debt Reduction Workshop

The Challenge

A self-employed contractor in his early fifties with two hire purchase agreements, a personal loan, and ongoing credit card usage. He had tried to build a repayment plan on his own but found the variable monthly income made it difficult to maintain any fixed approach.

The Programme

He attended the Practical Debt Reduction Workshop, including the in-person group session in Kuala Lumpur. The workshop's module on hire purchase early settlement addressed his specific situation directly. His two counsellor consultations focused on how to structure repayments around variable income.

The Outcome

He settled one hire purchase agreement early, saving a meaningful amount in interest charges. A flexible repayment structure β€” with minimum and target monthly amounts β€” gave him a workable plan. He described the workshop as "the first time I had someone explain the early settlement maths properly."

Case Study β€” Comprehensive Recovery Programme

The Challenge

A household in Melaka β€” husband and wife, both in their late forties β€” with a mortgage, two personal loans, hire purchase, and several credit cards. Total household debt had accumulated over a decade of insufficient attention to the overall picture. They had been avoiding the subject because the totals felt unmanageable.

The Programme

They enrolled in the Comprehensive Recovery Programme. The dedicated counsellor conducted a full household review in Month 1. AKPK was explored and ultimately found to be a suitable route for two of the personal loans. The recovery binder contained a coordinated plan covering all accounts, with separate and combined household figures.

The Outcome

By the end of the four months, both were enrolled in AKPK's programme for the applicable loans, had closed two credit accounts, and were following a structured monthly plan for the remainder. They described the experience as "the first time we looked at all of it together and it stopped feeling impossible."
